Michigan's education numbers are still bad. No Leadership

Each Spring in Michigan, the Detroit Regional Chamber hosts the Mackinac Policy Conference to focus on critical regional issues of education, business and policy. https://www.detroitchamber.com/mackinac-policy-conference/2026-mackinac-policy-conference/2026-agenda/

When it comes to education, people who are interviewed by media outlets or sitting in a discussion roundtable will tell you the difference between this year and last year is the amount of attention education is getting by so many diverse groups who want to make a difference. Once they leave they all go back to their day-to-day jobs and their pressing issues. Nothing gets done.

Like many of the conferences I attended over the years in my business and educational career, much is said, little is done and most are there for the entertainment and refreshments. Everyone feels someone or some group is responsible for change

Current statistics again point out that than half of Michigan students are not proficient in reading or math. Recent assessments reveal a concerning trend in Michigan's education system, with over 50% of students failing to meet proficiency standards in both subjects.

At this time, there are 1.4 million students enrolled statewide from kindergarten to 8th grade.

According to experts, only 42.7% of third graders are proficient in math, and only 39.6% of third graders are proficient in reading.

I was pleased to read that some Michigan representatives provided some interesting suggestions as to attack the problem. So where is the overall plan?

“What Gets Planned and Measured, Gets Done.”

I have been writing on this topic for years, it's amazing each Spring how this conference comes together at talks about education reform with little being done and no changes are on the horizon. Following is a link that provides many ideas and solutions:  https://qualityg.blogspot.com/search/label/education

I am grateful the participants continue to highlight the end-result problems, but they never apply "Systems Thinking" to the overall end-to-end process. In other words, No Leadership

I wrote/blogged this in 2009 about No Leadership:

qualityg says:
No Leadership
means
No Aim
means
No Plan
means
Chaos
means
Absolute Power
means
Stagnation
means
Ultimate Failure
No where is this scenario more prevalent than in government and our primary, secondary and

higher level education systems
