Company Principles for 2010 and Beyond

The way the economy is going and the fall of some of the leading companies in the world what will help get us back on track? I believe a good start would be with the "Principles" or the foundation blocks that have been destroyed with short-term goals and thinking.

What follows are some basic Principles that each senior leader should revisit and implement:

A company principle is a fundamental belief that is focused on the continual performance improvement of our services and products through addressing the needs of our customers, employees and stakeholders. The principles are as follows:

Customer-Focused – we must consider our customers’ current and future needs, fulfill customer requirements, and strive to exceed their expectations while keeping corporate strategies in our sights.

Read - http://qualityg.blogspot.com/2008/02/customer-focus-2008-beyond.html

Management Owns Our System and will establish constancy of purpose and direction for the group. They also create an environment in which all employees can be involved in obtaining company objectives.

Employees as People – our team approach is the essence of who we are and what we stand for. We need to listen and support each team member and to encourage each person to express their innovations and creativity.

Process Approach – by using a process approach to managing resources our activities will produce the desired results. When activities our work activities are linked together there is a structure for effectively managing and improving.

Systemic Thinking – company efficiency and effectiveness will be improved by identifying, understanding, and managing a system of interdependent processes that results in improving the whole not just the parts of any situation.

Continual Improvement – our company must have continual improvement as a permanent objective. Our premise will be to follow our Quality for Process Improvement. We must never settle for the status quo. Challenge Conventional Thinking!

Management by Fact – each of us needs to manage our work by collecting and analyzing objective data and information in order to make effective decisions that are certified by sound financial bottom line results. Avoid Short-Term Goals and People with short memories who are looking for the quick ride to the top at your expense.

Supplier Relationships – by working and partnering with our suppliers and contractors we will develop mutually beneficial, interdependent relations that will create a win-win situation for all involved. Perhaps looking a a single suppliership is required.

Why I Still Like Girls Basketball - (Updated 3/7/09) - Season Over

Welcome to Season Three - "94 Feet To Glory"

July 14, 2008 - Season Three

The 2008/2009 season started back up last Monday and Thursday of this past week with our summer practices before we go to camp. We had the July 4th week as our down week as required by state rules. I have also started up Sunday night shooting.

In-between practices several of the players have been getting together for conditioning workouts. What is especially gratifying is all our seniors have been there to show the younger players their commitment to the team.

After August 1st we will move in to our 3 player and coaches workouts (including shooting). This is a great time to work and evaluate players for the upcoming season. We had great success with this last year and it will be even more valuable this year because of the size of our team. We will be more athletic which means we will need to become much quicker and stronger. It will be very difficult to make up for the size and skill we lost from last year but we will make up it up with

"94 Feet to Glory."

We will be playing baseline-to-baseline offense and defense, which requires we have a rotation of 8 or 9 players who are in shape and can shoot "accurately" on a dime. More importantly it means conditioning will be a major factor for those who want to play both ends of the floor. In your shirt defense is the standard for all five players on the court.

Shooting accurately and quickly is a must if we are to be competitive in every game.

We are very excited about our returning players because they realize they need to step up this year. Each of them has the ability to get ample playing time if they work on their conditioning and skills (not just at practice).

Being in game shape requires more strength and conditioning than just running so we will be adding additional strength and conditioning to our workouts starting August 1st and for the remainder of the season.

Next – A New Team & A New Camp

July 24, 2008
Camp was very interesting this year. Our lack of size was very apparent but our effort made up for our lack of height. Varsity and JV each played 10 games in 2 ½ days and it was very hot and muggy in the gym.

Both the JV and Varsity had ups and downs as far as playing well together but that is what can be expected when you have a young team and limited practice before going to camp.

Both the JV and Varsity Coaches were very pleased with the overall results and the Varsity coach was able to find some players that may have a chance to make Varsity.

The best part of the camp for me is being able to watch and learn from our coaches and to see the interactions that take place as the chemistry of a team comes together.

I also like to watch the players on defense and that there conditioning they have been doing on their own really paid off at the camp.

The worst part of the camp was the injuries we sustained during the camp, some minor (Blisters) and a few major (Dislocated knee, ankle break) injuries.

Next – Three with Two

Updated 10/03/08

Our 3 player workouts which we began last year with the season change has again proved worthy of the time and effort that goes in to each one twice a week. We have also been3 player shooting on Sunday nights that continues to show promise as each of our players are becoming well-tuned shooters.

One new aspect of this year’s planning has been our 15-minute weight lifting program that is at the end of each player’s workout.

The players are also working on their conditioning two times a week running and exercising. They know the importance of our new system and they know that hard work and no let up attitude will amount for playing time. They are like young colts waiting for their first race. They see the improvements they have made and would work out every day if time and space allowed it to happen.

This season will be one of changes and special situations based on the talent and characteristics of our team. Coach is building a team unlike those of the past. Not necessarily for change itself but because in order for us to be successful this year and in the upcoming years we must be ready for “94 Feet of Glory.”

"94 Feet of Glory" is based on Defense and our ability to disrupt the guards on the opposing team they will be screaming for their Momma’s to pull them out of the game. We have four “Mighty Mites” that are going to make life miserable for opposing players up and down the court. This does not leave our other players with less responsibility, in fact the pressure is on them to make steals and know what “Anticipation” really means.

Updated November 9th, 2008

The girls have been chomping at the bit to be able to hit the floor with a basketball with more than three girls allowed on the court at the same time. I would relate this to football when it’s time to put on the pads and start hitting and blocking people. Tomorrow tryouts begin and the coaches are eagerly waiting to see how our off season workouts and conditioning have paid off. We are really proud of the girls because they did not have to be prompted to push themselves without a coach. This team is extremely proud and knows this a much different team than the one who went to the state final four last year.

Coaching will also have to be different this year. A good leader whether it is in business, education or sports knows that to get the best out of each player so that it forms in to one complete unit is to be a situational leader.

Coaches must be patient and consistent this year. Emphasizing a certain method and then abandoning it when things get tough or to win one (piece) game but sacrifice the season (whole) will be a constant task. I believe the coaches and the players we have will rise to the occasion when called upon to do their job.

There is little room for error this year and defense is a must, not just good defense, but defense like no other team at this school has ever seen.

Two Games Played

We won our first game of the year by playing good defense and hitting some key shots. The one area we must improve on is balancing our outside shooting with passes to our Bigs and guards penetrating as far as they are allowed and then pitch out to the wings for better shots.

Our second game we played hard in spots but we were not able to handle the Bigs form our opponents, especially as our two Bigs sat on the bench with 1st Quarter foul trouble. Much was learned from this game by both players and coaches.

This week has been spent scouting a number of our future opponents. It’s going to be very easy to determine the outcomes. If we play “Defense” at 100% we will win. If we lose sight of the ball and the man after our person passes the ball we will lose.

End of Story

Updated 12/28/08

So far this season has been one of difference. While we are in the midst of changing coaching styles and team chemistry it still comes down to the basics. More commonly known in Football as “Tackling and Blocking.” If I can’t add or subtract it is useless to go on to multiplication and division tables. These terms are called “Fundamentals.”

The Varsity team is 1-3 after a loss last night. Big Loss, Big Crowd and Big Questions.

When you have a small team like we do this year Fundamentals are the difference between winning and losing. Coach has told the girls repeatedly that our margin for error is slim if we want to win games. That margin can only be made up with Fundamentals.

Like Football he same can be said in Basketball. If we can’t dribble, pass, defend or box out nothing else can be improved upon. And, as the coach says, “If one player does not run the play correctly then it will fail, it takes all of us to work in unison.” The same can be said for playing defense.

It is not about doing fundamentals right, it’s about doing the right fundamentals right.

So what do we do when there are big gaps between levels of player’s fundamentals? Aggh that is the beauty of coaching, making decisions at the right time for the right reasons.

It all depends on the situation you are in and knowing your players strengths and weaknesses. When you are being pressed you must not have poor dribblers and passers on the floor. Above all you must not have players who shy away and do not want the ball by playing close to their defender as to look if they are covered.

Coaches like Business Managers own the system. The players and the employees who play and work for us can only succeed if the environment by which we place them is conducive to their talents and skills. None of our players goes to practice each day hoping to screw up or make a mistake.

We must know what situations are right for players to be on the floor and which are not. Sometimes it may be a small line up and sometimes a big line up. Knowing when is vital, and that is a coach’s job not players, so it is are fault if we make the wrong decisions not the players because we put them in a situation to fail.

So what do we do when we don’t have five skilled players to put on the floor? We simplify our offense and defense until we do and we play the best we can and have fun knowing we did the best with what we got. Are we satisfied? You are not a coach if you answered yes, but we must also understand it is our system and the whole must improve not just each player or each level.

Updated 1/13/09

We are still struggling in a number of fundamental areas but we are showing improvement in others each game. Our record is now 2-5 with a win last Saturday on a very cold snowy winter afternoon.
I have said since the beginning of the season that I believe this is a March Team. Which means it is going to take us all season and hopefully be ready for a run in the State Tournament.

Our league seems to be very balanced this year with everyone getting beat by someone. Just goes to show you that Basketball is a game of match-ups. Unfortunately, because of our size this is a very tough match-up for us in most of our games so far.

We are expecting more snow and sub zero temperatures this week. However, our play must continue to stay warm.

Updated 2/15/09

No, the update date is not an error. I have not posted in over a month. No excuses I just have not had anything to write.

Our record currently stands at 5 Wins and 11 Losses. I have played on losing teams but I have never coached one. In losing I mean the record not the the players.

Our team is like playing a round of golf. Sometimes my long shots are good but my putting is bad. Sometimes putting is good but my approach shots suck. You know the feeling it just does not seem to want to come together at the same time.

While some have said we are undersized and lost all our talent from the previous year these are not excuses the coaches will put forth as reasons. Defense requires all out effort and we have not done that consistently in a game for the whole season. If you play good defense you can stay in a game and hope at the end some breaks will go your way. However, first you have to stay in a game.

We did not defend our Catholic League Title nor our Divisional Title. We have one goal we still shoot for and that is to get ready for the State Tournament that starts 3/2/09. We still have four games to play but our effort will be towards winning our District.

Our team is like Notre Dame. Teams don't want to beat us they want to kick our ass and many of the girls on the team don't understand what it means to always play with defensive effort.

Updated 2/22/09
One of the highlights of each year "Poster Night." After the game (We Won) tables are set up and all the players and coaches sit around them and sign the poster of the players for 2009. The first 100 school children get free posters and they are allowed in the game free.

We have three games this week and next Monday the State Tournament begins which we hope to play in three more games in our District. I have said all year that I believe this year's team is a March team and now we will see if I am correct.

Update 3/1/09

We have won our last 4 games including 3 this past week. All 4 of the teams won their leagues so it nice to close the regular season on a high note. Last Thursday was a big victory but last night (Saturday) was very satisfying because we had a 1 1/2 drive home and the bus was filled with harmony (much singing), pizza and just happy feelings.

As coach said "We go as Turnovers go." Of course those words are not new to a basketball team but for this team it is the ultimate truth, even more than our lack of size.

I'm so happy for the seniors and this week we start our District games. Hopefully there will be 3 games this week with the last one on Friday being the crown jewel. against our rivalsNo one likes to look ahead but I want Friday Night so bad and does the team.

Updated 3/7/09

We took a six game winning streak in to the District Title game but the season ended last night with a well played game by both teams. We led for three quarters but lost the 4th big with defensive breakdowns that have plagued us all year.

It's always sad to say good bye to the seniors but this team has laid a solid foundation for us to be better next year.

Thanks for reading and I'll start writing again in July when we leave for camp.

"I Want Quick Results - But We Have No Meterics"

DETERMINING METRICS

Trying to determine what is happening in a process without first standardizing the process is wasting team and employee energy. How can we improve a process without first knowing if it stable and then determining if it is capable of producing the desired results?

How do we know what process is in most need of improving? Why do leaders pick numbers out of the air (along with project completion dates) and subject workers to their incompetence and then punish them when results are not provided fast enough?

Do they any clue to what are Process and Quality Measures?

I always asked the golden question that I learned from Dr. Deming - "By what method did you come up with those goals and targets?"

Make sure you ask humbly and then be prepared to be the one to go out and find the numerics. What leaders don't understand that in the long run taking the time up front to determine what and how big the problem is will save time in the long run.

You see taking time to evaluate the process does not bring results. Let me clarify - does not bring quick results. This type of investigative time is not value-added. The end of the quarter comes soon and so does the leader's next staff meeting. How dare anyone NOT provide non-quick faked numbers and goals and targets and hope no one remembers at the next meeting.

Perhaps the following write-up on establishing measures will get the process rolling. I can't promise the results will come super quick, but I can tell you the improvements will be long lasting because you will have built a process with measures that will let you know when something is wrong and not when a leader picks a process out of a hat.

METHODOLOGY FOR DEFINING AND ESTABLISHING CUSTOMER
FOCUSED MEASUREMENTS

  • Measurements should track how well our processes are performing according to:
    • Customer Expectations (including customer perception) and
    Organization Objectives
    • Customer Satisfaction • Value Drivers
    • Competitive Benchmarking • Employee Satisfaction

The above stated types of measurements will help determine the overall quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of all processes.

The activities involved in defining and establishing measures include:
1. Determining effective measures
2. Reviewing and validating existing measures
3. Implementing new measurements
4. Install a measurement and reporting system
5. Establish a feedback and monitoring system
6. Monitor measurements

1. DETERMINING EFFECTIVE MEASURES

Purpose:
Effective measures provide an insightful means about the efficiency of a process. Measures of this type are meant to track and align performance (process) and results (quality) indicators of a business process.

Establishing Effective Measurements:
Create effective measurements based upon the following:
• Customer expectations/requirements
• Practical to implement
• Easy to comprehend
• Consensus of agreement by group
• Able to help drive culture change

What to Measure:
Establish measurements based upon customer expectations and business objectives. These measurements should measure what our customers care about and what will drive our Value Drivers toward exceeding Operational business objectives.

Develop objective measures of customer satisfaction. Without measures, we have no means by objectively assessing the magnitude by which our processes are performing to customer and business requirements, and whether or not our improvement efforts and newly implemented systems have improved the process.

These types of measurements should provide objective data that will drive decisions that will produce long-term customer preference.

If suppliers are included, be sure to measure input characteristics and services.

How to Measure:
Implement simple, easy to understand measurements whenever possible. Measurements that are complex will not be used.

It is vital that our measurements be easily defined, understood and communicated to assure common understanding.

A small amount of meaningful measures are worth 10 times more than a large amount of nice to know measures (non-value added).

It's OK to experiment with measures, if they don't tell you what you need, stop measuring and create new ones.

If at the beginning measured identification is difficult, start with customer satisfaction, every major process has a customer.
Don't just measure one aspect of a process. Your measurements should be balanced with variable, attribute and some subjective characteristics like time, cost, quantity and customer perception.

Evaluating Measures:
In the beginning it might be best to implement a few strategically based measurements. As stated before, it's best to experiment and monitor the effectiveness of few, rather than implementing a large amount and never monitor.

2. REVIEWING AND VALIDATING EXISTING MEASUREMENTS

Purpose:
Once we've identified and understood what makes effective measurement, it is necessary to assess measurements that are already in place. Effective measurements provide input data that drive motivation for continuous improvement. Those that do not measure up should be changed or eliminated.

Measurement Balance:
If current measurements are only measuring internal business objectives, move to measure the effectiveness of our processes or solutions from a customer perspective.

Measure Behavior:
Implement measures that level to desired behavioral results. Verify the measures do not drive undesired behavior by our workers or to your customers. For example, many companies have found that they speculated "speed of answer" as a desirable measurement for customer satisfaction. Customer survey and interviews found that quality of service provided was more important than speed of answer.

3. IMPLEMENTING NEW MEASUREMENTS

Purpose:
It is vital that any new measurements implemented are effective and efficient and that it is collected, analyzed, and used in a way that motivates positive behavior and not punitive threats to workers.

Data Collection:
Make sure those responsible for collecting or installing new measurements are familiar with data and are part of the implementation plan.

4. INSTALL A MEASUREMENT AND REPORTING SYSTEM

Purpose:
Installing a measurement and reporting system requires an action plan of implementation that identifies the roles and responsibilities of the Process Owner and Sub-Process Owners who will be accountable for the measures.

This also requires agreement on what measures will be reported and that method and system support is available. The Action Plan must include trend analysis and plans of who will respond to them in a timely basis.

Automation:
Whenever possible and cost effective, automate as many measurements as possible. The advantage is more accurate and timely data collection and analysis.

Share Measurements:
Post measurements data in visible places, so that results can be shared by workers in the process. It's also a good idea to keep everyone in the process informed from end-to-end.

5. ESTABLISH A FEEDBACK SYSTEM

Purpose:
By establishing a feedback system, employees will keep abreast of changing expectations and update the current process as required.

Sharing Feedback:
Corporate Quality, Marketing, Sales and Front Line customer facing employees must keep upper management aware of changing customer needs so that business objectives and measurements may be changed accordingly.

It's also important to share feedback with workers in the process as well as customers and suppliers.

6. MONITOR MEASUREMENTS

Purpose:
Employees identified as measurement owners must constantly evaluate their measurements, reassess customer needs, and continuously search for new ways to use data for continuous improvement.

Evaluate Measurements:
If your measurements are not accurately reflecting process performance or drive undesirable behavior, they should be removed. Update or install new measures as needed.

Benchmark Measures:
Benchmarking your process measurement performance relative to your competitors will be vital to competition. Benchmarking provides information to leaders that helps establish performance targets based on data from the marketplace. Benchmarking is a useful method to supply additional data and information but not to be used exclusively for changes or measurements.
Good Luck!

What is the Purpose of Mainstreaming/ Inclusion for ASD Children? The System has won again and another boy's future is sealed --> Updated 12/14/08

Updated March 29, 2017

I was sent (Valerie) this link for a new web site. The magazine provides expert advice from respected professionals about autism and offers solutions for families.

Check it out it is really good!

Updated 12/14/08
This weekend I attended a number of Holiday gatherings with friends and family I have not seen in some months. Three times at two different locations I was informed Justin was no longer mainstreamed and was now in the Center Program where he will remain until he graduates.
Of course I knew this and I think of him and the other boys everyday. Somehow I feel as if I have failed him. I hope the experts are right in their decision to remove him from mainstream. But my heart says the system has failed this boy because of dollars and lack of faith.
I vow there will still be more to this story...

Today (9/04/07) was the first day back at school. I was looking forward to seeing all the teachers, children and especially interested on how the ASD boys spent their summer vacations.

As I met Justin at the front door I was told to take him to the resource room and not his scheduled room posted for 4th grade. It was then I learned that Justin was going to be put into a Contained Room to work on his behavior problems and maybe later to be mainstreamed back in for some special classes. In the meetings that took place this week his young (uninformed) parents are surrounded by psychiatrists, psychologists, principals, social workers, etc telling them what is best. I am not allowed to attend or speak to the parents about special education issues.

Needless to say I was ready to explode. No one has spent more time with him at school than me over the past years. Last year he was not asked once to leave a room by a teacher because of his behavior. I have made it a point to learn and document his triggers so I can prevent most of his outbursts. Some days I know a particular class may not go over well so I get his work and we do it together in a more relaxed environment. This was the exception and not the rule.

You see some people (i.e., principal, social worker, director, no-nothings) would walk by and see us in the resource room or hallway and "assume" he was not in class because of a behavior problem (ie., not listening to teacher). Last year that was very seldom the case. Sometimes he would get sensory overload in the music class so I would take him out and we would do homework or study science or read a book and discuss it contents. Sometimes in Art they would be working with gooey or clammy clay and Justin will have nothing to do with it, another sensory problem. My decision was rather than color a ditto we would leave and find a quiet place and work on any subject that we were behind in or need extra study. His teachers knew what was going on because I kept them informed and they went out of their way to help in any way they could. I will always be grateful to DB, SP, EB, AL, AP and the Special Ed Aides. Justin and I both learned so much and they played a big role in his learning. It was not always smooth and sometimes it was very tough but we all learned together for the betterment of the children.

I am a better person for working with such a fine group of educators and people.

Not once did anyone ever ask why we might not be in the regular class. You see people will walk by (like they do in a store or restaurant) and "assume" the aide (parent) can't control the child.

Goals (especially behavior) are not provided for the ASD children, it is the aides responsibility to provide goals. This is wrong, wrong, wrong,(they learned this from the business world managers. Administrators (Managers) own the system, they provide the goals/targets and the aides provide the means and measurements on how to achieve the goals. They are then agreed upon by both parties.

Just like in the business world if you want me to set goals I will make them every time unless I'm an idiot. They mean nothing.

Let me say this very clear and it does not only apply to Disabled individuals. Life and what a person brings to the table can not be determined/measured in a Snapshot (a series of one time observations or assumptions without asking or seeking further knowledge).

Life and Learning is a Motion Picture (on-going) and you must take into account the end to end information and data to make good sound decisions for improvement. Otherwise you tamper with the child (system) and make things worse. If I have a bad day or a teacher gets so frustrated they may yell or scream to get attention. But that is a single occurrence and no one remembers all the good days.

I asked by what method was this decision determined? I was not asked, his 3rd grade teachers were not asked, his speech therapist was not asked. I’m not going to go into all that was said but it came down to Justin was to dependent on me and will listen to know one else. At least he listens to someone and we have been working on that issue too.

What is the goal/purpose of inclusion/mainstreaming?
I Googled & Yahooed this topic and found no real concrete answers. My goal this year for 4th grade was to get 80/20. That is 80% independent and 20 % Dependent in some areas. At the same time I was hoping maturity would also play a part in his on-going development and independence. The long-term strategy is to prepare him to be very independent as he enters Middle School (7th grade).

They say he can’t learn unless I am sitting there keeping him on task. They say he won’t listen to teachers but looks to me for guidance. What they don’t say is he completed all his work and homework last year. Granted some was late but he did keep up. ASD Children in many cases will not respond to shouting or demanding, they will react in the same manner and are not intimidated like general education students.

By what method was this decision made? No one has asked for my documentation for the past 2 years or used the Daily Behavior Logs that were kept for two years. No one asked his 3rd grade teachers who promoted him. It was decided by Professionals (except Speech Therapist and Regular General Education Teachers) in an IEP meeting who made decisions based on subjective observations without asking questions or understanding the reasoning as to why we were laying on the carpet taking a Spelling Test. Heck he averaged 80% for the year and he was never asked to leave the room.

Speaking of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) meeting without regular education teachers are was violation of
IDEA ACT 2006 Laws and Regulation (IDEA 2004, P.L.108-446). Sec. 300.321 - IEP TEAM states:

IEP Team must include the Parents; at least one of the child's regular education teachers (if the child is, or may be, participating in the regular education environment); ...

ALSO

Sec. 300.324 - Development, Review and Revision of IEP says:
The Child's Regular Education Teacher, as an IEP team member, must to the extent appropriate participate ...

The answer they say is he could not do it unless I was sitting next to him. Hell if my parents had not been so strict about my studies I may have not learned much either. The point is HE is doing the work and I am not giving him the answers. He is capable but he has a disability that needs constant and consistent attention to function in a general education environment.

Perhaps I am wrong, my answer was (since know one else told me) to error on the side of the child. If I taught him manners and how to respect others and to tell me if he is upset rather than lash out then I’m wrong. If I gave him the self-worth that is drastically missing in his life then I am wrong. If I gave him right and wrong with the understanding this was for his own good then I am wrong. I am wrong if I spent my lunch hours for the last two years researching and trying new methods for Justin and the other boys to learn how to socialize on their own (read my other posts). Some days they would play kick ball or run around with their peers, other days they would wander off by themselves.

The biggest fear I have is that the Administrators who don't look pass their nose will think what they did was a success. Justin will be happy and will thrive in the contained room. He will become the ring leader because he is the oldest and the most functional. He will manipulate the teacher and aides to let him play as a means to be good. So what is my fear? THEY HAVE SECURED A PLACE IN A GROUP HOME FOR JUSTIN TO LIVE OUT HIS ADULT YEARS AND YOU CAN TELL THEM I SAID SO! They should be ashamed.
Without guidance as to what the goal is for mainstreaming, I will take a shot based on my experiences and knowledge (remember that each ASD child is as different as the stars in the sky.).

Mainstreaming's purpose is as follows:
1) Understand and follow rules and regulations as determined by the government and by the school system.

2) Follow existing work plans and procedures and create the best possible learning environment for child, teacher and aide.
3) Develop a plan to provide the child with the necessary skills to interrelate in school and community.
4) Implement a plan of action to prepare the ASD student in the early grades (K-6) to be as independent as possible and how to react to situations at the junior high school and high school.

NOTE 1:
It is false to think that most ASD children do not want to interrelate or socialize. The fact is they lack the social skills and this results in meltdowns, anxiety and frustration for the child. One way I have found to reduce this from happening is by using Visual (i.e., Calendar, Schedule, etc...) Learning.

NOTE 2:
In order to teach social skills and to lead by example a continuous and separate form of teaching needs to take place in and out of the classroom (recess, gym, parties) by the aide(s).

I have also found that Rehearsing situations prior to them happening is an excellent way to prevent and prepare the student for what is coming. Sudden changes to schedules or even a substitute teacher can trigger a meltdown or disruptive behavior.

The argument is (and perhaps valid) what happens if I am not there? I am just an instructional aide, I am not a teacher (not certified) but have four degrees. My response is nothing might happen just like before you asked me to work with him because no one else could handle him. The awards, letters and praise mean nothing to me now.

In reality there are four of us who have worked together for a number of years and in an emergency or a period of time and could step in with little transition because all of the boys are comfortable with us. At the least it would by time to make the most effective changes possible that do not disrupt the learning's of the child or the disruption of his/her class.

I have posed the dependency question to a combination of five psychiatrists and therapists (including Justin's). They all said if I was not leaving soon (leave after 6 months or a year) that nothing is wrong because what the child needs is stability and structure in sometimes a very chaotic environment (school). They also said this might be the only opportunity he gets to depend on someone (me) and socialize with his general education peers who are overwhelming supportive of Justin.

Again my question is What is the goal/purpose of inclusion/mainstreaming?

Is it that an ASD child must be able to function alone in a classroom without any assistance? I would agree and say yes. However, what is the timeline? It will not happen overnight and if there is not a consistent effort over time it will never happen.

Is it any different than the multitude of children who are not graduating today because they never had anyone to show him or her the correct way? Unlike an ASD child who will act out most of the so-called silent minority of students who are not learning are pushed through the system as long as they sit there and behave.

If this is the way it is going to be then the powers that be best get the screening process fixed, because if you are going to mainstream/include ASD Children that are to dependent through their educational career it will not happen the majority of the time.

As for me I think some of the leaders were expecting an OK response from me. It did not happen nor will it ever happen. I’ve devoted most of my time and learning’s to Autism over the past three years and I will never have enough knowledge or wisdom as I would like but I will continue to Seek Profound Knowledge. I have asked to be reassigned to another school or perhaps it’s best to move on…

If any of you parents, administrators, aides, etc would like to comment I would appreciate the feedback. I am not proud enough to say all what I did was right or all wrong. It only matters what is best for Justin.

My Note: One of the ways I use to differentiate a person who is Autistic or Asperger's is by using three criteria; Behavior, Communication and Socialization. My involvement has shown me that Asperger students (Includes High Functioning Autistic) have Behavior and Socialization issues but are very capable of communicating (This does not mean it may OK). Autistic students have trouble with Behavior, Socialization and Communication (Some do not speak at all).

I would just like to know what is the goal/purpose for inclusion/mainstreaming?

Please, I really want to do what is best for Justin (and the other ASD Children), not to prove who is right or who is wrong.

I firmly believe now that Money (too many kids not enough aides) & Oil are the roots of all evil and are the causes as to why things get so messed up and continue to do so...

Thank You,

Greg

I am leaving the elementary school and going to the high school. I will miss my co-workers (friends) dearly. I am a better person for knowing these (and teachers) people. This was not a forced move but hopefully the best move for the children, especially Justin.

Perhaps this Poem says it all for me:

OUTDOOR PLAY FOR J and J

At 11:45 we start to get antsy, he smiles like an old gray fox
At noon we go to our lockers and get our Sponge Bob lunch box
He then checks our shoes and pulls up our socks.

Then it’s back to class and get called in to line
We shuffle to the back because he said that’s where we shine
He walks with us quietly and whispers all will be fine.

As we walk quietly in line headed to the lunchroom we go
We then search for a place at a table where a friend might show
The man who is with us sits across the room avoiding the flow

Often times we don’t eat and sometimes we act like kooks
Then the lunch ladies turn and wave to the man reading the book
He then stands where we can see; he gives us the “Look” and the room just shook.

After we eat we go to recess, sometimes it’s in, but we hope it’s out
It all depends if the flags are green hanging about
Yellow means stay inside then we groan and pout

Today we go outside and play on the equipment
We hope a friend will stop and play even if it’s a minute
But most of the time we play alone and it seems to be infinite

At 12:35 the whistle blows loud and sometimes we cover our ears
You see the decibel and noise level brings out some fears
Then the man with the bag who is always around, shows up and assures he is always near

After we line up we will try not to talk and to stay in line
Then our teacher meets us and says you all look fine
And the man who walks behind smiles and says we shine!

Problem Solving - "DIMS" - 20 Years Later

20 years ago I created my own problem solving method with an acronym of "DIMS." I created it because when it comes to problem solving I needed some method by which I could quickly move through my analysis that did not get muddied by multiple checkpoints and quality consultant trained mumbo-jumbo.

I hope it helps you too - qualityg
