Why I Still Like Girls Basketball and Girl's Softball !! - Tokyo Olympics - Chiddy!!

July 25th, 2021 - Tokyo Olympics - Chiddy!

So proud of our former star player and most valuable player in high school - Amanda Chidester, I started calling her Chiddy Chiddy Bang Bang (From the 1968 movie "Chitty" starring Dick Van Dyke) when she would drive me in to the bleachers during one of our drills (Duke Driving Drill) when going hard to the basket. More Pics of Amanda and team at bottom of the post from 2007-2008. See Side Bar.
Amanda could have played college basketball or volleyball but she went on to star for four years in women's softball at the University of Michigan. After college she has been playing for the USA National Team and coaching.

Amanda comes from a great family and she has always found time for her friends. She is truly and all star and Olympian in all facets or her life.  cc

Why I Still Like Girl's Basketball - Season Over

End of an ERA,

May 2017,

Coach Ro Calls it a Career

I had the privilege of coaching with Mike for over 10 years in a number of capacities. We go back even further when we both coached CYO basketball. He coached my son in both CYO and High School before heading to Cabrini where we met up again.

He is superb coach but he is a better Father, Husband, Teacher and FRIEND!
Mike Rozanski has been coaching Cabrini girls basketballfor the better part of 20 years.  After this past season Coach Ro, as he’s affectionately referred to, has decided step away from the coaching ranks.  Coach Ro will be missed! The St. Frances Cabrini community thanks him for his dedication and passion towards girls basketball and wishes him the best of luck!  Below are some career achievements for Mike Rozanski:

-Won nine MHSAA district titles
-Won two MHSAA regional titles
-Five time MHSAA regional finalist
-Two MHSAA state final fours
-Six Catholic League division titles
-Twelve players went on to play in college
-Nine all state players
-Four time Catholic League division coach of year
-Two Catholic League Championships

JULY - 2013

We attended our summer team camp last week and just like previous years we learned a lot about what to expect for our upcoming season. I would have to say the coaches were expecting some better results but yet we were not surprised at the outcome.

This is basically a new team from last year that will need to develop their own identity and develop an internal leadership group that must lead the team both on and off the court.

We continue to lack size but we are more experienced in some key positions. The summer workouts have been good and I have added some speed and agility drills that hopefully create quicker hands and feet that we must have to play solid team defense this year.

Our summer workout sessions have been well attended and learning continues to take place at each practice.

November - 2013

We have concluded our 4 Player Workouts and had a good turnout to work on their individual skills.
This week we are concluding our try-outs and should have a good nucleus of players from 10th - 12th grade.

Team Leadership will be a factor going forward to determine which players want to take the lead and what players will be voted to be the leaders. In other years this was predictable but not this year.

I must say that if I was to pick a saying for this year it is:

PRACTICE HARD and PLAY HARDER!
How Hard? By putting everything you got in to each practice and a little more into each game going forward by being better than you were the day before - cc

December - 2013

The team may have lost our best defensive player and senior captain to injury. We are waiting on the MRI and the doctor to determine the extent of the injury. Nothing affects me more than seeing a player work so hard and go down to injury (especially senior year). Others will have to step-up if we are to be successful this year.

We had a five team scrimmage last week and we got beat up pretty good both physically and mentally. There are always good things to learn from these situations and we now have a good sense who can handle pressure and who is tough when it comes to pushing oneself beyond the norm.

First Game - We won our first game against a team that was not very good. What I especially liked was the play of a few players who really crashed the boards and got some easy put backs through hard work and hustle.

February - 2014

We are now 7-7 and we have again been riddled with injuries but in truth that is the nature of sports and not to be used as an excuse. We play in a tough league and if you are not prepared or have "Basketball Players" on your team it is very difficult to win tournaments, leagues and championships.

Basketball Players are those who work on their game all year long and especially in the off season to get in daily defensive drills and shooting work (200-300 shots). Fundamentals must be taught early (5th grade on...) because too much time going over blocking out, closing out, defensive position and multiple offenses and defenses in daily practices in high school proves futile. If I can't add or subtract what good does it do concentrating on multiplication and division and story problems that required deducing the facts? Just like in the classroom there is a wide knowledge gap between those that get it and those that do not. To win you must have at least 7-8 players who get it and are on the same page. The result is you beat teams that you should and lose to teams that you should. Thus - you have a 500 season.

It's very simple -
"For the most part you can not improve your game while preparing to play the next game"

February 27,  2014

Unfortunately we lost our first game in the state tournament and our season is over. Our local paper did a nice pictorial and video shoot of the game that can be found at:
http://www.miprepzone.com/thenewsherald/results.asp?ID=9450

I will miss the girls

This will be the last Post of this series. It's been a good run and for the most part fun.
SEASON SEVEN - RACK ATTACK!
To read the six previous seasons click on the label to the left on the main page where where it says "Girls Basketball" or click
Tryouts are over and it is now time to build a team that lost 8 seniors - Ouch! We had a good summer camp with better than expected results that provides an outlook with promise for the upcoming season.
With any new young team we will struggle against bigger and more mature teams but we will let each team know they have been in a game. The coach is implementing new offense - RACK ATTACK and defensive schemes that fit our athletic abilities.
Stay Tuned...

Updated - 12/1/12 - RIP Big John

We had our first game last Thursday. We lost the game. The big gap was that our trusted friend and scorekeeper was not there for the first time in over 10 years. John passed away a few months back and I miss him dearly. He was a good friend who accompanied me on scouting trips and we had a blast rating the concessions stands at each game we attended. The following tribute was made to John at his funeral:

Mr. Noland (John) was an avid supporter of the Lady Monarchs Girls Basketball program, driving to any location we played, in any weather, regardless of his own commitments. He had been a member of the Cabrini Lady Monarchs as a scorekeeper, scout, and friend and assisted with scorekeeping going back to his daughter's Brandi and Amber's playing days in CYO as 5th -6th graders. He frequently adjusted his work schedule at Ford Motor to fit in his basketball duties. He was faithful in bringing all the coaches their "Away game meals" that his wife Sandi would graciously make prior to long rides to Cardinal Mooney, Waterford, or wherever. He served our program for over 10 years after his last daughter graduated, and his absence will leave a gaping hole in our program. God must have been starting a new basketball team and needed some help. He found a good man to do so!
He will be missed at our games as we look to the scoring table but will remain in our hearts forever.

Updated 12/29/12 - Christmas Tournament

Our record is now 3 wins and 2 losses. We beat our cross-town rivals on 12/21/12 and then had two games in a Christmas Tournament. We got blown away in the opening game by 30 points and came back and won last night's game by 20 points.

A couple of our girls were unable to attend the first game but that was no excuse for the lack of effort and intensity that was put out by our team (we were down 18 - 3 in the 1st quarter).

The practice in between the games stressed defensive pressure, blocking out and basic fundamentals were pounded in to the team.

The team responded the way we hope to play each of our games for the second game and it showed.

Updated 1/23/13 - Half Way

We are currently 4 - 7 at the mid way point of our season. We won an overtime thriller last night to get our first league win and hopefully that will get us going for the remainder of our season. We have some very tough games in the next few weeks and we will have to play our best to compete and win.

The good news is we see progress in some of our players that is vital because they are Sophomores and Juniors.

Updated 2/16/13 - Still Struggling - but two in a row

Our record is now 6-12 but we have won our last two games. Last night was Poster night which is always a fun night made better with a nice crowd and a win. Honoring our three seniors was also part of the event.

We now have one game remaining before the State Playoffs begin one week from Monday. We have a Top 5 team in our District but first we must win our first round game.

Updated 2/28/13 - Season Over

The Season is over and we finished 7-14. We won our first District game but lost to a state ranked team. The girls played hard (down by 4 at half) but we just did not match-up well with the team that pulled away from us mid-way through the 3rd quarter.

The Banquet is in a few weeks and then it is back to the drawing board on how to improve this team going forward. Hopefully maturity and some good off season work ethic will get some players to be ready for next year.

Updated 8/4/11
Compared to previous years I am starting my posting for the upcoming season about a month or two late. It's for lack of material that I have not written it is just I have been more active with work this summer and AAU basketball.
We have played in a number of tournaments this summer and the girls have done well. More importantly it has been fun for the players and coaches. There are two players on the AAU team who play on our school team. We have many of the top players in our area on the team and it is great to see how they all get along and play together on and off the court.

I even found time for some fun!
We went to our school team camp last month and played well in some massive heat and humidity. We could not escape the heat even in the dorm rooms at night. We have also had our best turnout in years for summer workouts and conditioning. Unfortunately, we still lack size but we have a lot of girls that are good athletes.

This year is going to be very interesting because we may have eight seniors on our squad and one junior. Our schedule will be as tough as ever with the two time state champion team in our league.

We got word the other day that our cross town rivals removed their head coach and staff for the upcoming season. Two of the players on the AAU team play on that team. It's always been a good rivalry and I will miss BB and his staff. His school did him no favors by letting him go now since there were some open coaching jobs at the beginning of the summer. I'm sure he will find another position soon.

Updated 11/13/11
Next - 4 Player Workouts

Four player workouts went well. We have some bright spots in our younger classes. Looks like we may have 8 seniors on team this year.

AAU

We had four girls play AAU this past this Fall season. It was great experience for two of our players and I look forward to their improvement to help the team this year. We did walk away with a championship that three of our players were on the winning team and one of our players was on the runner-up team. In addition this team was also runner-up in the state AAU final for their age group.

Season starts December 2nd.

UPDATED: 12/7/11

We lost our first game by 3 pts when our last shot went in and out of the rim. It was the opening game for both teams and both teams played well. Some mental breakdowns from both players and coaches caused some lapses that her our chances of winning the game.

Two games next week and we are stepping up our defense. My bird dogs will be ready!

UPDATED: 12/17/11

Two wins this week with a nice one last night against our cross town rivals. We played two good defensive games and the offense was good outscoring one team by 40 and the second team by 25.

The bird dogs played well as you can see two (head blocked) of them on the ground getting the ball - OH BERT!

All the girls got to play and that is a good thing.

One game next week against a very sound well coached team. It will be a good benchmark to see where we are at this early in the season.

UPDATED: 12/22/11

Lost our last game and we are now 2-2 for the season. As I mentioned above this was a very sound team and well coached that we had trouble matching up with for the whole game.

We are picking up the defensive intensity in practice and the girls will be playing the complete game with this pressure whether it be zone or M-T-M.

It's nice to see that it takes 3 players to guard one of us! - Next Game 12/28/11 - Merry Christmas!!

UPDATED: 12/22/11 - SWISH 3

Wow! I received an Email from Shooting Guru Tom Norland of the SWISH Shooting Series. Tom is now releasing his new Shooting Video Swish 3. I have been using it for years and have seen my best pupils (those that listen and practice) go from poor shooters to very sound good scoring players. I've had two players increase their 3 pt range by 20%.

Here is some more information from Tom's Email. A bonus for me was to be able to chat with Tom on the phone.

We are a tough team this year but we have a ways to go especially finding a key player who can spark the team with some good outside shooting.

UPDATED: 1/28/12

It's been a few weeks since I last posted and we are now 6 wins and 5 losses. We have lost 3 games with less than 5 seconds to go in each. I believe that is a defensive let down in execution and planning by not stopping the best shooters on the floor in each one.
We are now in the heart of our schedule and we have three games within one week.

UPDATED: 2/12/12

Our record is now 9-7. We are better than our record shows on some days and on others I wonder how we have won any game.

Yesterday was one of those day's where we just did not come to play. I guess it starts with the coaches not having the team ready and it end with the players looking out of shape, not playing tough and then not really caring if they win or lose (at least that is what is sounded like in the locker room after the coaches left).

Four games to go in the regular season and then we play the defending state champs in our first state tournament district game. Last week I felt we could give them a game.

UPDATED: 3/03/12

Since I posted last we went on a 4 game winning streak and played some good basketball. We lost in the first round of the state playoffs to the defending state champions and they look like a good bet to repeat.

We finished 13 wins and 8 losses. Five of the losses were to state rated teams.

I enjoyed the season very much and the team we had was fun to coach. We lose 8 seniors so next year should bring some very interesting aspects as to who and how many make the team. We return one girl who started some games but other than that we will be very young and untested. BUT WE WILL BE READY!

Next Up - Banquet

JUNE - 2010
This will be the fifth season that I have documented our team pre-season activities and season. Two weeks ago I attended a Point Guard College Camp with two of my players and I attended the sessions as an observing coach.

It was a grueling week for the players and a really nice week for me in more ways than I can write. I was proud of the girls as they showed their skills and capabilities on the floor and handled themselves well with the other camp attendees. In my opinion the camp was well worth the cost (high by camp standards) because the skills taught were exactly what the players needed to get to their next respective level in basketball.

Of course the true test comes down to them practicing their new found knowledge. They both can get much better its just a matter of whether or not they will pay the price for success through hard work and dedication.

Best Shirt Slogan - SAVE THE DRAMA FOR YOUR MAMA, JUST PLAY THE GAME!

We have already had a few set backs this summer with two players not returning to the team. They were good players and great young ladies, but if a player no longer has the passion to play then it is best for all they move on to other sports or activities.

We have a talented team this year but like the past two seasons we lack size. Our league is one of the toughest in the state with three teams rated in the top ten in the state. On any given night we can beat them as we proved it last year. In fact, the two teams that played for the Class D state championship last year we beat them both.

One of the joys I have in coaching is working with young adults that have a passion for the game of basketball. I'm talking about the kid who has to be pulled in at night to go to bed because he/she is outside shooting; and I love it when I see a kid shoveling snow in the winter so he/she can shoot. Most of them are gym rats too. They are always wanting to work out to improve their game and do not have to coerced to work on their game. I'm looking for a player like that now but so far I only see it in one of our JV players.

Next Up - Team Camp - July

Wow, three hot days (90 degrees) in the gym and dorms. By the end of the camp we had four players out of thirteen with some sort of injury keeping them from playing at various times.

There were a few surprises in the play from a couple of players and hopeful moments when our best players showed some of their new skills. However, we have a way to go this year. More so than any other year since I can remember.

Players are going to need to be serious in order for us to be successful. Serious in their workouts both at home and at school. Serious about going to another level with their play and that means get to a driveway, backyard, park or gym and play and work on skills.

Next Up - August Four Player Workouts

We had five players show up for our 4 player workouts. Not the ideal turn-out but we were able to see how some of our new offense will look with three of our starters.

There was a lot of conditioning done and hopefully some chemistry being built for this years team.

AAU?? - October 2010

I have written before my displeasure with many AAU run functions and do not like to get involved unless I go watch my players play on a team. This past 6 weeks I helped (little) a team with two of my players on the team.
Fortunately the head coach and other assistant coach are very good and know basketball. More importantly they wanted the girls to learn and have fun. That combination allowed the girls to go undefeated in their league play and to win the season ending tournament. By the way I am not in the picture.

November 8th, 2010

Season Begins!!

Tryouts were different this year because we ran a combined group of 9th - 12th graders. The coach organized it well and it ran better than expected. There were some very hard decisions to make because in order to have three teams some players may not be on the team they feel they deserved but I feel each team will be competitive.

First Game - December 2nd

Updated 12/3/10 - Win 1st game but ...

It was nice to win our season opener last night. It did not come without some drama and heartache especially for one of our starters who was unable to play because of a face mask she was wearing did not meet state rules.

The other team did not have one of their starters either and this player is highly recruited and the team is rated in the top twenty in the state.

We will be playing multiple state rated teams this year and each week will be a challenge. I would not want it any other way.

Updated 12/10/10 - Win 2nd game but ...

It's nice to be 2-0 but I'm still concerned about some player's shooting and too many reaching fouls which means we are not moving feet and trying to steal dribbles when we should be keeping people in front of us.

Monday we play our cross town rivals. We have not played them in three years so I hope the rivalry starts up again with a good game.

Updated 12/22/10 - First Loss

It sure isn't hard to predict the success for this year's team. We have known all along that if our starters get in foul trouble we are more than likely to lose.

That is what happened our last game. Three of our starters got in early foul trouble and did not play but 4 minutes in the second quarter and hardly at all in the third quarter where we were outscored 15 - 3.

We had a 10 point lead in the first quarter and led at half 23 - 17. The final was 50 - 40 with us putting them on the line for the last 2 minutes of the game.

Tough loss but if that game did not wake up our starters to stop creating stupid fouls then nothing will.

Next we play in a Christmas Tournament with three really good teams. Until then have a Merry Christmas.

Updated 12/29/10 - Christmas Tournament

We played in a nice Christmas tournament against two quality teams. We lost our first game that has a very good player who we could not contain the whole game and we lost. We also learned that our press breaker and ball handling need more work. This team won the tournament

We rebounded the next day for a nice win against a well coached team from up north. We have yet to have a good game by all of our starting five. Our most consistent player is not one of our top scorers but her hustle and defense has been very good each game.

We start league play Tuesday against the number two rated team in the state in the Class D. We also have the defending state champion in Class D (rated # 1) in our league. I look forward to playing these teams twice this year.

Updated 1/2/11 - Poster Pics & Shoot
Each year we do a poster of the girls on the team in different situations and themes. This year we had fun in the classroom where the setting took place. The theme "We Have Something to Prove"
Here is a Pic and a Video Link:

Updated - 1/6/11

Our first League game was against a highly rated team that beat us soundly in the 4th quarter. Prior to that we hung around most of the game even though our shot percentage was the worst in recent memory (credit to opponents Defense).

It is still hard for me to comprehend why some of our girls are not playing to potential. The best I can hope for is we peak by season end.

Updated - 1/11/11 - Two Big Wins
We won a good game last Friday night with all the girls getting to play some good minutes. Last night we beat the number 1 rated team in Class D in our state. They are the defending champions that happen to play in our league and now the team that replaces them is also in our league.

I heard many comments on our defense and how hard the girls are working. Defense won the game for us plus some great team scoring by many players between 8 & 11 points.
Next we play a new team to our league that has a 6'4 and 6'2 post players.

Updated - 2/3/11 - Above 500
It has been a few weeks since my last update. Our record now stands at 8 wins 5 losses. We have our last league game Friday night and Catholic League Playoffs start next Tuesday. The last two years we have been eliminated in the first round. Prior to that we won the title two years in a row.

If we are healthy we have a good chance to advance with the proper match ups. Our team leadership and chemistry is still strong and that is a tribute to the coach and our captains.

Updated 2/9/11 - Two Wins

We won our last two games and the 1st game of the Catholic League Playoffs. Injuries and sickness are causing some minor discomfort but we really need everyone to be healthy soon before the state tournament.

School Fight Song has been ringing through the bus rides -

Updated 2/23/11 - Last week of Regular Season

This week we have back to back games because of the snow earlier this week causing a snow day from school. Both games will be physical and the best defensive team will win. Next week start the State Playoff and our first game is on Monday.

Our record now stands at 12 - 6. I am very pleased because we are an undersized team that usually wins when we match up in size but have great difficulties if our opponent has two or three 6' girls.

Updated 2/28/11 - State Tournament starts tonight

We lost one and won one last week. The moral of the week is to not play back to back games. We won our first game but ran out of legs in the 2nd. Our season record is 13 -7.

We should win our first game tonight which sets up a game Wednesday night against our arch rivals. I should not be looking ahead but I am!

Updated 3/5/11 - District Champs!

Its been three years since I was able to print District Champs. We won our first game easily that set up a game against our rivals that did not disappoint a packed crowd in our gym. It was a game that makes March Madness so special. The teams battle hard and we came out on top at the end. I really respect our crosstown rivals. They are well coached and have a lot of class.

Our district championship game was not a fluid display of basketball. But it's like the coach says does not matter at this time of the year how we won, just that we win. I'm so proud for our two senior captains.

Next up Regionals!

Updated 3/10/11

We won Tuesday's game by a good margin and the team we are playing tonight beat the team they played by even a wider margin.

We are definitely the underdog in tonight's game but if we play our defensive game and give effort for 32 minutes we can win.

After an away victory the girls always sing the Moose song (led by Bert).

This is a tradition and most of the girls on this team don't know the story of Fred the Stinky Moose. So here is a write-up from a few years back.
www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=11874839&postID=116023562163391612

Updated 3/12/11

We played hard but the other team was better. Nothing to complain or cry about because it was a total team effort and the girls played well enough to beat most teams, just not this one.

It's time to say goodbye to our two seniors which is always the hardest thing to do as a coach. Developing players for three and four years develops a strong bond that I hope will last a lifetime.

We finished 17 - 8.

Why I Still Like Girls Basketball - Season Over!

Welcome To Season Four

"We Want Them Back"

The past three season blogs can be found by clicking on the "Girls Basketball" Label found on the left sidebar.

NOVEMBER 2009
This year’s team began the day after our Team Banquet ended last March. There has been a hunger to get back what was ours. Last year we lost to teams that had never beaten us, we lost our league tile, our catholic league title, district, regional & quarterfinal titles and we lost to our arch rivals.

So what will be the difference between this years and last? Hopefully this year’s team will understand what we have lost and want to begin their own destiny. Coaches we feel we have more offensive weapons this year and we should be able to play consistent pressure defense for a whole game. If we do not we will lose, it is that simple. This summer many of the girls have been working hard on their shooting and passing.
We went to camp last month (July) and did a good job. I felt we beat the teams we should have and we hung with those that beat us including some top rated teams in the state. We are one fundamentally sound big (6’2”) from being a very dangerous team. However, we have hearts this year that can make up the difference.

While at camp we suffered cuts, breaks, sprains, slams and many bruises. And guess what? These kids stuck their noses right back in and kept playing with humbleness and confidence. Many times you see players backing away after they take a hard knock, not these girls they can give as well as they take.

We have a strong captain returning this year who has done a wonderful job this summer building confidence and camaraderie among the returning players and the new freshman entering the school. She has done a number of team building events and leads by hard work and determination.

School starts in a few weeks (August) and we will be moving in to working with small groups (4 players) of players who do not play a Fall sport. Some of the girls are also considering joining a Sunday night league to get some additional playing time before the season officially starts in November.

I also want to give a shout out to one of our 8th grade coach's who has spent some considerable time in India this summer.

Hold that Tiger “E”.

11/8/09 - Try Outs

Tomorrow begins our season and our first game is December 1st. Three of our first four games may be the toughest we face all year. In fact, this may be the toughest schedule we have had in years. Two of the teams in our league made the final eight last year in the state tournament (They are one of the first four teams).

Try Outs start tomorrow and unlike last year it will be difficult to make this team.

The coach is implementing new offensive schemes that will work great with the talent we have on the team. While we are undersized we have many good athletes. A good number of the girls have worked hard this summer and I see some nice improvement.

We will be considered a young team but we still have four players who played on our Final Four Team three years ago. All four will contribute heavily to the success of this year’s team.

We could be a very good team with a 500 record this year. That is OK because I would rather play the competition than to have an over rated record.

This is going to be a very interesting year. Defense, Defense, and more Defense! Stay tuned!

11/28/09 - Fire & Ice & Wind

I can't believe our first game is next Tuesday. We have 12 players this year and each practice brings hopes of a good season. Tomorrow we have our annual scrimmage against a well coached team that provides great competition and a good gauge for improvement.

8#s of Nothing!!

12/6/09 - 70 and 70

Our first week is over and we had two polar games. One good and one bad.

The first game we lost and gave up 70+ points. We were actually leading early in the 2nd quarter but a key player got in foul trouble and we could not contain a starting line-up of our opponents 6'3", 6'1 and 5'10" Our biggest starter is 5'8."

No excuses, we let in far too many lay-ups and did not move feet enough on defense.

The second game we scored 70+ points and won the game by over 30 points. Size way we matched up evenly but we had too much depth, speed and good defense on their best player who averages around 19 ppg. We held her to twelve with five coming in the 4th quarter when the game was well out of reach.

We have no games this week but we face two teams the following week that may be the best teams we see until the state tournament.

Like most teams we have many weaknesses to work out but this team has something special and that is heart. These girls do not give up, they get frustrated but do not give up.

12/20/09 - Not good enough

As stated in my lat post we did play two good teams this past week and lost both games. While these teams are in an upper division it does not matter when it comes to effort and the will to win.

It is just not the effort to win but truly believing you can win. That is what we won from the past two games. I believe the girls know they can compete and win any game we play.

The potential for this team is an on-going step by step process that must be managed carefully but at the same time increase the talent of a few player who will play pivotal roles towards this years state playoffs and the next two years success that may field some of the best teams to play at our school.

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Enchanted New Year!

1/3/10 - New Year, New Confidence

It truly is a new year for our team. If we can capture the defensive intensity, communication and running game the team displayed at a scrimmage against two higher class teams than us last week we will be in good shape to compete in our league which has two top ten state rated Class D teams.

We started the scrimmage slow but played out played and outscored our opponents at will for the remainder.

We play both of them this week. This team has potential and we are going to surprise some non-believers this year. I just hope none of them remain on our team.

1/17/10 - Improvement is Evident

Our record is 3 wins and 5 losses. We have three games this week and if the team can maintain defensive intensity we will win all three game to put us above 5oo.

Tomorrow we play our fourth game against a state rated team. It would be a good win because we had a rough go last Friday and we did not respond to some "trap" pressure which we usually handle very well in most cases.

The gap between understanding and skill level is narrowing from top to bottom players on our team as the season progresses. This can only happen during good intense practice sessions where the girls are trying to make themselves better by banging and grinding out each possession. While it is not as consistent as the coaches would like it is getting better.

Our schedule is really tough and I like it that way. It is tough on the girls who don't really understand because they like their parents and many fans judge by wins and losses. This is especially true for the JV and Freshman Teams. It is my belief it is more important that kids play at this level for development. The overall goal is to get players ready to play Varsity .

Wins and Losses get in the way because many JV and Freshman coaches want wins and for a good many players who need develop they do not see the floor and do not get the attention in practice for continual improvement.

1-2-3 WIN!

1/25/10 - Rivalry Week

Since my last update we won our game against a state rated team and lost two games by 2pts each in the last minutes of the game.

Losing close games drain you both physically and emotionally. The team starts doubting if they can win and start blaming others for losses. Even the parents start to chime in with comments that are better off unsaid. If they must make stupid comments they should first have to stand up and say I am an idiot. I say this because this is what the other parents think of you they just don't want a confrontation so they pretend to agree with you.

This week we have two games. The first one is against a neighboring city which is a Class A Team (We are C). They have never beaten us so the pressure is on both teams to win. We need a win to get some frustration out and to go in to Friday's game against our arch rivals.

It will be interesting to see if the girls will get ready to play and it will be more interesting to see if the coaches can too!

2/1/10 - Back to Basics!

Two games two more losses. The girls are playing hard and we lost both games. We just are not doing the little things right to win games. The little things are called "Fundamentals."

There is little practice time to adjust but we will have to find time for boxing out and taking care of the ball. It is tough for the girls and each loss brings more outside drama to the team.

Sometimes things like the drama can only be settled by the team themselves. I believe that will have to happen to this team to be successful for the remainder of the year.

2/12/10 - Win One Lose One

My last prediction was correct and I think internally the girls have become to work things out as a team. However, outside influence in the form of tampering with some our team members by another sport is causing other problems.

I must be getting soft because because in past years I would have hit this problem head on and probably would have made things worse. So maybe I'm just getting smarter (I hope so). In any regards, I don't forget and some people won't know what hit them or when by the time I am done. (I am also now very patient).

Last Monday we beat another state rated team (4th this year) but lost to an inferior team on Thursday. This team does not know how good they are and do not have any idea what is is to win a big game and sustain that feeling to another game.

We have three games left until the State Championships start March 1st. If we get momentum we will be dangerous. If we win one and lose one it will be a crap shoot.

3/1/10 - State Run Begins

We won our last three non- league games in good fashion. It really proved just how tough our league is and the parity between the teams. We won each game by at least 15 points.

This is a fun team with many players who can help and contribute in scoring, defense and good solid play. Our District Games this week will be tough but we welcome the competition. We are prepared and we are all excited.

3/5/10 - Season Over

The season ended in a way that every player and coach hope does not happen. Losing to an inferior team and not playing your best for a complete game. We score 15 pts in the first half and was down by 17 pts.

We got to within 3 pts in the 4th qtr but could not get the lead and we lost. I wish I could say their defense stopped us in the first half but we missed 4 wide open lay-ups (That I remember) and a number of free throws and we were not moving. It was like a flashback to the beginning of the season and how we were playing.

I feel terrible for the three seniors. Hopefully, the juniors and sophomores will remember the pain they felt in the lockeroom after the game and devout their off season to a new level of commitment for the game.

Why I Still Like Girls Basketball - (Updated 3/7/09) - Season Over

Welcome to Season Three - "94 Feet To Glory"

July 14, 2008 - Season Three

The 2008/2009 season started back up last Monday and Thursday of this past week with our summer practices before we go to camp. We had the July 4th week as our down week as required by state rules. I have also started up Sunday night shooting.

In-between practices several of the players have been getting together for conditioning workouts. What is especially gratifying is all our seniors have been there to show the younger players their commitment to the team.

After August 1st we will move in to our 3 player and coaches workouts (including shooting). This is a great time to work and evaluate players for the upcoming season. We had great success with this last year and it will be even more valuable this year because of the size of our team. We will be more athletic which means we will need to become much quicker and stronger. It will be very difficult to make up for the size and skill we lost from last year but we will make up it up with

"94 Feet to Glory."

We will be playing baseline-to-baseline offense and defense, which requires we have a rotation of 8 or 9 players who are in shape and can shoot "accurately" on a dime. More importantly it means conditioning will be a major factor for those who want to play both ends of the floor. In your shirt defense is the standard for all five players on the court.

Shooting accurately and quickly is a must if we are to be competitive in every game.

We are very excited about our returning players because they realize they need to step up this year. Each of them has the ability to get ample playing time if they work on their conditioning and skills (not just at practice).

Being in game shape requires more strength and conditioning than just running so we will be adding additional strength and conditioning to our workouts starting August 1st and for the remainder of the season.

Next – A New Team & A New Camp

July 24, 2008
Camp was very interesting this year. Our lack of size was very apparent but our effort made up for our lack of height. Varsity and JV each played 10 games in 2 ½ days and it was very hot and muggy in the gym.

Both the JV and Varsity had ups and downs as far as playing well together but that is what can be expected when you have a young team and limited practice before going to camp.

Both the JV and Varsity Coaches were very pleased with the overall results and the Varsity coach was able to find some players that may have a chance to make Varsity.

The best part of the camp for me is being able to watch and learn from our coaches and to see the interactions that take place as the chemistry of a team comes together.

I also like to watch the players on defense and that there conditioning they have been doing on their own really paid off at the camp.

The worst part of the camp was the injuries we sustained during the camp, some minor (Blisters) and a few major (Dislocated knee, ankle break) injuries.

Next – Three with Two

Updated 10/03/08

Our 3 player workouts which we began last year with the season change has again proved worthy of the time and effort that goes in to each one twice a week. We have also been3 player shooting on Sunday nights that continues to show promise as each of our players are becoming well-tuned shooters.

One new aspect of this year’s planning has been our 15-minute weight lifting program that is at the end of each player’s workout.

The players are also working on their conditioning two times a week running and exercising. They know the importance of our new system and they know that hard work and no let up attitude will amount for playing time. They are like young colts waiting for their first race. They see the improvements they have made and would work out every day if time and space allowed it to happen.

This season will be one of changes and special situations based on the talent and characteristics of our team. Coach is building a team unlike those of the past. Not necessarily for change itself but because in order for us to be successful this year and in the upcoming years we must be ready for “94 Feet of Glory.”

"94 Feet of Glory" is based on Defense and our ability to disrupt the guards on the opposing team they will be screaming for their Momma’s to pull them out of the game. We have four “Mighty Mites” that are going to make life miserable for opposing players up and down the court. This does not leave our other players with less responsibility, in fact the pressure is on them to make steals and know what “Anticipation” really means.

Updated November 9th, 2008

The girls have been chomping at the bit to be able to hit the floor with a basketball with more than three girls allowed on the court at the same time. I would relate this to football when it’s time to put on the pads and start hitting and blocking people. Tomorrow tryouts begin and the coaches are eagerly waiting to see how our off season workouts and conditioning have paid off. We are really proud of the girls because they did not have to be prompted to push themselves without a coach. This team is extremely proud and knows this a much different team than the one who went to the state final four last year.

Coaching will also have to be different this year. A good leader whether it is in business, education or sports knows that to get the best out of each player so that it forms in to one complete unit is to be a situational leader.

Coaches must be patient and consistent this year. Emphasizing a certain method and then abandoning it when things get tough or to win one (piece) game but sacrifice the season (whole) will be a constant task. I believe the coaches and the players we have will rise to the occasion when called upon to do their job.

There is little room for error this year and defense is a must, not just good defense, but defense like no other team at this school has ever seen.

Two Games Played

We won our first game of the year by playing good defense and hitting some key shots. The one area we must improve on is balancing our outside shooting with passes to our Bigs and guards penetrating as far as they are allowed and then pitch out to the wings for better shots.

Our second game we played hard in spots but we were not able to handle the Bigs form our opponents, especially as our two Bigs sat on the bench with 1st Quarter foul trouble. Much was learned from this game by both players and coaches.

This week has been spent scouting a number of our future opponents. It’s going to be very easy to determine the outcomes. If we play “Defense” at 100% we will win. If we lose sight of the ball and the man after our person passes the ball we will lose.

End of Story

Updated 12/28/08

So far this season has been one of difference. While we are in the midst of changing coaching styles and team chemistry it still comes down to the basics. More commonly known in Football as “Tackling and Blocking.” If I can’t add or subtract it is useless to go on to multiplication and division tables. These terms are called “Fundamentals.”

The Varsity team is 1-3 after a loss last night. Big Loss, Big Crowd and Big Questions.

When you have a small team like we do this year Fundamentals are the difference between winning and losing. Coach has told the girls repeatedly that our margin for error is slim if we want to win games. That margin can only be made up with Fundamentals.

Like Football he same can be said in Basketball. If we can’t dribble, pass, defend or box out nothing else can be improved upon. And, as the coach says, “If one player does not run the play correctly then it will fail, it takes all of us to work in unison.” The same can be said for playing defense.

It is not about doing fundamentals right, it’s about doing the right fundamentals right.

So what do we do when there are big gaps between levels of player’s fundamentals? Aggh that is the beauty of coaching, making decisions at the right time for the right reasons.

It all depends on the situation you are in and knowing your players strengths and weaknesses. When you are being pressed you must not have poor dribblers and passers on the floor. Above all you must not have players who shy away and do not want the ball by playing close to their defender as to look if they are covered.

Coaches like Business Managers own the system. The players and the employees who play and work for us can only succeed if the environment by which we place them is conducive to their talents and skills. None of our players goes to practice each day hoping to screw up or make a mistake.

We must know what situations are right for players to be on the floor and which are not. Sometimes it may be a small line up and sometimes a big line up. Knowing when is vital, and that is a coach’s job not players, so it is are fault if we make the wrong decisions not the players because we put them in a situation to fail.

So what do we do when we don’t have five skilled players to put on the floor? We simplify our offense and defense until we do and we play the best we can and have fun knowing we did the best with what we got. Are we satisfied? You are not a coach if you answered yes, but we must also understand it is our system and the whole must improve not just each player or each level.

Updated 1/13/09

We are still struggling in a number of fundamental areas but we are showing improvement in others each game. Our record is now 2-5 with a win last Saturday on a very cold snowy winter afternoon.
I have said since the beginning of the season that I believe this is a March Team. Which means it is going to take us all season and hopefully be ready for a run in the State Tournament.

Our league seems to be very balanced this year with everyone getting beat by someone. Just goes to show you that Basketball is a game of match-ups. Unfortunately, because of our size this is a very tough match-up for us in most of our games so far.

We are expecting more snow and sub zero temperatures this week. However, our play must continue to stay warm.

Updated 2/15/09

No, the update date is not an error. I have not posted in over a month. No excuses I just have not had anything to write.

Our record currently stands at 5 Wins and 11 Losses. I have played on losing teams but I have never coached one. In losing I mean the record not the the players.

Our team is like playing a round of golf. Sometimes my long shots are good but my putting is bad. Sometimes putting is good but my approach shots suck. You know the feeling it just does not seem to want to come together at the same time.

While some have said we are undersized and lost all our talent from the previous year these are not excuses the coaches will put forth as reasons. Defense requires all out effort and we have not done that consistently in a game for the whole season. If you play good defense you can stay in a game and hope at the end some breaks will go your way. However, first you have to stay in a game.

We did not defend our Catholic League Title nor our Divisional Title. We have one goal we still shoot for and that is to get ready for the State Tournament that starts 3/2/09. We still have four games to play but our effort will be towards winning our District.

Our team is like Notre Dame. Teams don't want to beat us they want to kick our ass and many of the girls on the team don't understand what it means to always play with defensive effort.

Updated 2/22/09
One of the highlights of each year "Poster Night." After the game (We Won) tables are set up and all the players and coaches sit around them and sign the poster of the players for 2009. The first 100 school children get free posters and they are allowed in the game free.

We have three games this week and next Monday the State Tournament begins which we hope to play in three more games in our District. I have said all year that I believe this year's team is a March team and now we will see if I am correct.

Update 3/1/09

We have won our last 4 games including 3 this past week. All 4 of the teams won their leagues so it nice to close the regular season on a high note. Last Thursday was a big victory but last night (Saturday) was very satisfying because we had a 1 1/2 drive home and the bus was filled with harmony (much singing), pizza and just happy feelings.

As coach said "We go as Turnovers go." Of course those words are not new to a basketball team but for this team it is the ultimate truth, even more than our lack of size.

I'm so happy for the seniors and this week we start our District games. Hopefully there will be 3 games this week with the last one on Friday being the crown jewel. against our rivalsNo one likes to look ahead but I want Friday Night so bad and does the team.

Updated 3/7/09

We took a six game winning streak in to the District Title game but the season ended last night with a well played game by both teams. We led for three quarters but lost the 4th big with defensive breakdowns that have plagued us all year.

It's always sad to say good bye to the seniors but this team has laid a solid foundation for us to be better next year.

Thanks for reading and I'll start writing again in July when we leave for camp.
